Dear brothers and sisters,

It happened. In September it happened. 1.3 billion pounds of almonds were harvested. We estimate that about half were exported with the remaining 600,000,000 pounds fumigated. Both organic and commercial were fumigated, the one with with steam, the other with propylene oxide. We can use this as a sort of window to see into the soul of this America. No elected official,no elected body authorized this, rather it was done largely by bureaucracies. Of course there was the usual window dressing of a public hearing... at the last minute... to merely ratify what had been decided upon, long before, behind closed doors. There was no time for those concerned about the liveliness of their food to protest. Most heard about this iniquity only long after it was perpetrated.

This did not have to be. There were so many alternatives. For example, organic could simply have been made exempt- maybe with a warning sign:-Who ever partakes of these almonds, does so at the risk of becoming more rhythmically and pulsatingly alive!!! What have we come to... that in America, almonds are fumigated?!

That is why we call it Freedom Butter. Our almonds are grown with intentionality and devotion by family farmers. Here in Berkeley, brothers and sisters working together transform them into alive almond butter. We never do it all at once but over a period of several days. It is both costly and labor-intensive. Could it be that an almond.... is not an almond.... is not an almond..... but that the intentionality of the people who grow them and the people who process them make a real difference. Think about it for a moment... whom would you like to have in your kitchen, a family farmer and a brother or sister or a character out of Kafka ? We invite you then to put Freedom Butter on a slice of cucumber and meditate on the loving care and devotion that has gone into it . Gaze at its texture, savor it’s aroma and come to the realization that it is a prologue to the new world that one day you will build.

UNHULLED Tahini

Our UNHULLED tahini is made from the whole sesame seed. It is more nutritionally rich than tahini made from hulled sesame seeds. Here’s The Winning Essay!

Obesity and Live Food
By Brian Burton

Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer are pillaging the natural capital and human wealth of this nation. They derive their terror and power from obesity. The obesity epidemic isn’t just a problem Americans should be embarrassed about. It’s a problem that is siphoning off the life force and vigor of this country and its people. Obesity isn’t just about being fat. It’s about quality of life, self respect, and spiritual development.

Contrary to popular belief, obesity is not a disease of “over-nutrition”. Obesity is very clearly a disease of malnutrition in an environment of high-calorie, denatured, toxic, and highly acidic food supply. The bodies of obese people are crying out for minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients that cannot be found in the sludge which much of the large corporate body is pushing upon the population. How easy is it to have a binge on white sugar, white flour, and white icing? A veritable “puff cloud” if you ask me. Why don’t Americans binge on parsley or chicory greens? When living, highly mineralized, organically grown foods are consumed, the hunger response is quickly tamed because the body is being fed. The body has what it needs. How many Americans could stay fat if they were only allowed to eat all the kale they wanted? You couldn’t become obese if you tried. For those of us that have educated ourselves on proper nutrition it is easy to see the solution. In fact the cost of obesity to this country could probably pay for living, raw, organic food for the entire population several times over. A sobering thought! A person with obesity however, cannot see this so clearly. the solution does not seem so attainable because a weakened body is only part of the destruction left in the wake of improper diet.

If denatured food is sludge for the body, it is just as much sludge for the mind. One cannot achieve a very high level of consciousness when processed sugar is stressing the adrenals and throwing the nervous system into overload. When denatured protein is clogging the basement membranes and cell membranes are being compromised by free-radicals, trans-fatty acids, and oxidized, rancid oils, it can be very challenging for an obese person to change their diet or even see that such a dramatic change is possible. A chaotic internal biological milieu does not allow her/him to. The body uses fat reserves as a veritable landfill for acids, toxins, and other compounds for which it does not have the vital force to expunge from the body but must buffer from the billions of life supporting cells that must be maintained for life to continue. When a person tries to change their diet, the shock of these poisons being released from burned fat can be extremely difficult to deal with physically and emotionally. Obesity is like a hill that gets steeper the farther down you travel. The determined person can always climb back up, but they made need that help of those of us who are lucky enough to be aware of the potential of raw, living plant foods to heal the body and mind.

Most of us are aware of the profound effect our childhood has on our adult life. When an obese child is laughed at or teased for being fat, that is the very least of the emotional scars that will likely burden the child in his/her adult life. When a child is competitive amongst his/her peers, it builds confidence, self esteem, and the desire to continue to succeed. An obese child who has not had the experience of excelling at a sports or making friends while enjoying physical activity is unlikely to have received the positive reinforcement that drives us to maintain an active lifestyle in our later years. At no time is it more important to encourage proper diet and participation in sports and outdoor activities than when a person is in their childhood years. The statistics on childhood obesity is in this country is a nightmare that makes our national debt look like a mere pot-hole. If physical activity and nutrition were the primary subjects taught in elementary school, American children would easily be capable of making up for the years of lost reading, writing, arithmetic, social studies, science etc. Minds sharpened by proper nutrition and physical conditioning would be worth years of sitting in the classroom in a state of numbness induced by lack of exercise and improper food-choices.

The solution to the problem of obesity doesn’t need to be self-deprivation. Just keep adding things in until the good choices replace the bad. Just as much as we have a glut of bad food choices, the number of good choices we now have defies belief. We have access to super-foods from every continent. Kids are more flexible than any other age group. They can change if we make it fun for them. The transition back to a natural diet should be an adventure. The future of our society depends on it!
