Dear brothers and sisters,

We read of a recent estimate for the cost of healthcare legislation at about $2 trillion over 10 years. Let’s look at this from the point of view of life:-

The proposed health reform before Congress is based exclusively upon allopathic medicine. It excludes the thousands of years of accumulated wisdom of traditional and alternative medicine and instead focuses exclusively on a particular form of medicine which is been around for just about 200 years. It negates the alive food movement, the organic food movement and the alternative medical movement. Your tax dollars will go to support conventional medicine with its dangerous pharmaceuticals, it’s chemotherapy and it’s unnecessary surgeries. There is no pill that can make you healthier! A pill can only mask symptoms, and more often than not, cause additional health problems. Then there is the staggering number of medically unwarranted surgeries that are performed each year.Furthermore, the conventional medical system is the leading cause of death in this country through medical errors.(Please see the article by four medical doctors and a statistician in our Homage to American Medicine.)

Just as with the pasteurization of almonds,the “healthcare reform” it is an affront to your wisdom and common sense.

It has nothing to do with health or well-being. It is simply diverting hundreds of billions of dollars to doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. It is not going to make you any healthier. I suppose that this is what is meant by “change you can believe in”.

We offer then a modest proposal. Our emphasis is upon preventing disease. We are confident it would slash health care costs dramatically: --

1. We propose that every American has the inalienable right to soul-satisfying, creative activity. “Work” would become meaningful as it visibly contributes to the well-being of every American. It would be secure and reasonably compensated. Can we not eliminate, once and for all, the fear and terror of losing one’s job and with that one’s livelihood, health and well-being? We read in the newspapers that 14.5 million Americans are out of work. But if we include people too discouraged to keep looking for a job and those working part-time because they can't find full-time slots, the unemployment rate shoots up to a new high of 16.4%. This means that about 25 million Americans are effectively out of work. One can only imagine the effect on their health and well-being of this unconscionable tragedy.
   
2. Vibrant good health is the birthright of every American. It is an idea whose time has come. It shall be free. Moreover, every American shall have the right to choose the form of healing that suits them best, be it naturopathy, chiropractic, psychotherapy, live food or conventional medicine. There is no need at for the intermediation of HMOs, managed health care companies, insurance companies or whatever; aside from enriching their stockholders, they perform no productive function and merely increase the cost.
   
3. Every American shall have the blessing of being able to grow his or her own food. Be it in a backyard or community garden. What could be more healing than contact with this American earth and discovering, at the same time, that the parsley, kale, lettuce and celery that you grow yourself are the true “miracle foods”, “magic foods” and “super foods”.
   
4. We propose that American agriculture begin at once to make the transition to organic and that this be completed within three years. and and thereafter, all food sold in the United States shall be organic.

No politician is going to do it for you. It is up to you to bring about “a new birth of freedom” based upon kindness, decency and respect.

Hi, I'm Kate! My name is Kate Skalak, I am a recent graduate of Iowa State University finishing with a B.A in mass communications and minors in speech and food science. I moved to Berkeley at the begaining of June to start my internship here at Living Tree Community Foods to work on the marketing and sales in the southern U.S region, Canada and the kosher market. When finishing up my internship here I will then move on to post-graduate school at Kingston University in London, England. I will be completing my masters in marketing, specalizing in organic foods. In my free time I enjoy playing sports (basketball, running, wakeboarding etc), cooking, working out, socalizing and listening to music. I personally live by a vegetarian lifestyle and highly enjoy visiting the farmers markets as many times a week as possible.

Hi, I'm Maddy! I’m Maddy Gale from Hendersonville, NC. I’m going to be a senior at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA where I’m studying media studies. I just returned from a semester abroad in Botswana where I lived for 4 months with host families and had various internships while studying the Setswana language and culture. I’m in Berkeley for the summer and interning at Living Tree Community Foods to learn about marketing and sales and am currently working with the kosher market. In my free time I enjoy biking, yoga, hiking, and reading.
