Essay Contest

Dear brothers and sisters,

We read in the newspapers that 14.5 million Americans are out of work. But if we include people too discouraged to keep looking for a job and those working part-time because they can't find full-time slots, the unemployment rate shoots up to a new high of 16.4%. This means that about 25 million Americans are effectively out of work.

Now as we have argued in our previous newsletter, most Americans have a profound need to engage in useful and productive work. Furthermore, we feel that in all human beings there is an existential need to be creative.

If this is true then it is simply not enough to provide a "job", just as it is simply not enough, you will heartily agree, to just provide "food". Just as we have now reached the stage in human evolution where we dare to inquire as to the "aliveness" of food, so too, we dare to ask as to the "aliveness" of a "job". Is it making use of our creative potential? Do we go home at the end of the day exhilarated, having worked with brothers and sisters in a way that has contributed to the wellbeing of our fellow Americans, or have we expended 8 hours in drear circumstances doing little else than augmenting corporate wealth?

Now we mentioned that 25 million Americans are unemployed. Assuming an eight-hour day, these Americans can expend one billion man-hours each week or 52 billion man hours each year! What could not be accomplished with that sort of energy? Imagine if but a fraction were devoted to recreating tenements into garden cities, de-schooling society, establishing healing clinics, helping make the transition to a wholly organic agriculture and so much more. The boundless creativity of American men and women! This is no dream; we see it every day in the dedication and responsibility of our team workers and the bubbling enthusiasm of our interns here at Living Tree Community.

Let us then ask the question that has never been asked before:

How could the 25 million Americans currently "unemployed" be focused to breathe life back into this America? 52 billion man-hours for life, for healing, for abundance. What would be their tasks, their projects, their enterprises? (This surely is the deepest ecology.)
