Take the Power Back
by Michele Geracoulis
What is Codex Alimentarius?
Latin for “food code,” it’s a set of international regulations designed to outlaw any health products and practices connected with vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, and other dietary supplements. This also includes universal limitations to natural therapies. The Codex Alimentarius Commission is seated in Rome, Italy, and is the joint creation of the World Health Organization (division of the United Nations) and the Food and Agricultural Organization. It alleges to “harmonize” the international trade of foods, nutrients, and dietary supplements.
The World Trade Organization and its member countries implement these regulations. Covertly more than an international free trade issue, Codex regulations are dictatorial in nature. Instead of focusing on health or food safety, Codex actually sanctions an international ban on vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements. By classifying food as a “drug” rather than a “nutrient,” Codex has the authority to interfere with our organic food supply and natural supplements. With the financial backing of the multinational agroindustry, the pharmaceutical cartel and international banking cartel, Codex Alimentarius elevates the few and suppresses the many. Ultimately, the multinational cartels (pharma, government, corporations, banks, trade associations) reap privileged profits at the general public’s losses. Unless we stop it, the Codex is slated to go fully into effect by 2009.
A snapshot of relative history.
Since the end of the Cold War and the conception of the political buzzword globalism, the United States has climbed ever higher as reigning Super Power.
Globalism is the belief that political policies should address worldwide issues before speaking to the concerns of nations, societies, communities, or individuals. It’s the extremist’s version of “top down” policies. Today globalism wends its way through the world system masquerading as democracy and free trade. Trade agreements have been bred to produce an autocratic energy that has zero to do with participatory governance, AKA democracy. Self-governing nations have given up their autonomy, currency, natural resources, culture, and health all for the almighty trading pacts and the riches promised therein. These mergers and pacts have paved an outlandish “yellow brick road.” Follow the yellow brick road and discover not a brave, benevolent Super Power, nor even an errant “Oz.” The Iron Curtain’s been pulled back only to reveal madmen and women at the helm.
Codex expanded.
In 1962 the UN authorized WHO and the FAO to develop a "universal food code” to standardize international regulations on dietary supplements, and to promote global food trade. Financially brandishing influence, pharmaceutical ambitions have long since usurped this invented standardization process. Originally categorized as a “nutrient,” food henceforth will be classified as a “drug.” The good news is that these organizations recognize the healing and health-promoting power of pure foods. The bad news is that they aim to keep clean, healthy food beyond our reach. The worse news is that Codex will advance “consumer food safety” through scientific {i.e. pharmaceutical) means.
The General Agreement on Trade & Tariffs automatically enforces the Codex guidelines and standards. Therefore, any signatory country – the U.S. being one – is bound by the trade guidelines. The implication is that all GATT member countries’ domestic laws will be replaced with Codex laws. In the U.S, this would, in effect, roll back the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, which currently protects our supplements. Codex allies downplay the guidelines, claiming them to merely be a procedure for free international trade. NAFTA trade, for example, is facilitated in this way, theoretically to ensure quality for the importing and exporting of food products. This very “quality control,” incidentally, has led to the demise of our raw, organic almond.
You won’t see Codex on CNN.
Real news doesn’t make headlines. Commercial, corporate media only serve to distract society from the real news. While reality shows and nighttime soap operas captivate public consciousness, fascism quietly advances upon us. If this sounds Orwellian, it is! It amounts to outright dictatorship that slips in wearing the guise of “free trade.” Clean, healthy foods and holistic health care come from individual choice, not from an elitist controlled market. Until we exert our power of choice, our power of voice, an imperialistic Codex Alimentarius Commission will make decisions that radically impact our health.
We know that fascist, hard-line policies do not work. Centralized governance has only ever wreaked havoc on humankind. It’s unfathomable, but we seem not to have learned lessons from the past. Sadly, the majority of our populous has fallen into a deep state of apathy. We’re asleep at the proverbial wheel.
A slight digression.
At present, self-interests of the few (Codex Alimentarius Commission) have precedence over the interests and well-being of the many. It’s part and parcel of a grander scheme at hand, that of unilateralism. I venture to say that most people are oblivious to what’s happening right here in the good old US of A, much less in countries abroad. Take, for instance, the neoconservative “Project for the New American Century,” which blatantly strives for American global domination. Or the NAFTA highway construction that’s underway, only to be followed by the CAFTA highway. When or if these happenings get any media attention, it’s cheerfully spun as globalism and free trade. It’s bogus, and it’s high time that we wake up and get involved. Codex Alimentarius is significant in that it gives us an opportunity to take a stand.
Never before has the adage “you are what you eat” carried more relevance. A population dumbed down by a tainted food supply – as Codex promises – is a passive one. Genetically-modified, irradiated, hormonally altered, pesticide ridden, nutrient barren, mineral stripped, chemicalized foods weaken and sicken the human body and brain. Just look at what’s already happening. At no time in history has there been more disease on the planet. Eating healthy, whole, pure foods has the opposite effect. It promotes the vibrant life force within that is our birthright!
Stand up and take action.
Speak up. Share this information with everyone you know. Various individuals and groups are at work to prevent Codex Alimentarius from enacting fully into law, but they need our help. Get involved. Inform your congress(wo)men, especially since most of them are ignorant on the issue. Educated and united, we are particularly powerful, and it’s our prerogative to take the power back!
